Battlefields of the Mpumalanga Escarpment

Battlefields of the Mpumalanga Escarpment

Situated within an easy 2,5-hour drive down the N4 from Johannesburg or Pretoria the Escarpment of Mpumalanga lays almost unexplored.

Within the ridges and valleys of the Escarpment lies some hidden treasures of battles, wars, and mysteries dating back as far as the 17th century.

We explore the area well known for action that took place in the 1st and 2nd Anglo Boer War.

Focusing on the 2nd Anglo Boer War, and the prelude to the last fixed battle that took place between the British and Boer forces with the battle of Berg & Dal just outside of Belfast and the aftermath of this battle.

We take a look at both the British Forces Advance, General Buller with his Natal Field Force from the South, and the Defensive Line Drawn up by the Boer General Louis Botha along the vital supply line of the railway connecting Pretoria and Delagoa Bay on the East Coast of Southern Africa.

What to Expect on a Day Tour

We start the day off in the town of Dullstroom where we will do an overview of the history.

From there we depart to Belfast to the Berg en Dal Monument where we will chat in detail about the advance of General Buller and Lord Roberts’s forces, the Boer Defensive lines and where the 4 x 155mm Long Tom guns were most probably situated.

The 74 x ZARPS situated in the kopje at Berg en Dal, the bombardment and the advance of the British forces.

From the Berg en Dal Monument, we depart and head back to Belfast where we do a quick stop at one of the oldest monuments in the Transvaal for the Great Trek.

We move back along the Wit Rante and discuss General French and General Paul-Crew’s advance on the 27th of August 1901, while the attack on Berg en Dal took place by General Buller.

We visit an outlook position held by the Boer’s for the majority of the war where they were able to observe British forces movement.

We have a light lunch at Greystone Lodge.

From there we move back towards Dullstroom, visit the British Graves at Groot Suikerbosh Kop.

We conclude the day at the Dullstroom Inn for a final question session and some coffee and tea in the oldest Inn in Dullstroom.
