Birding in and around Dullstroom

Dullstroom is in relatively close proximity and easy drive on the N4 from not only Johannesburg and Pretoria but also Nelspruit and it has become a prime weekend destination and it provides a sample of the very best birding the Escarpment of Mpumalanga has to offer. Dullstroom offers great accommodation options with comfortable guesthouses, luxurious hotels, and lodges.

FFF Safaris has the privilege to take birders to many privately-owned properties in the area offering excellent photographic opportunities.

Dullstroom is situated on the Escarpment of Mpumalanga at 2000m above sea level.

Due to its location, it’s a fascinating area for a birder offering a variety of habitats that makes Dullstroom and surrounds a unique birding location with rare, localized, elusive, and spectacular species on offer.

Some of the habitats around the town:

Wetlands, grasslands, rocky outcrops, mountain slopes with sugar bushes, plantations, and dams.

Specials in the area to look out for:

Wetlands: Wattled Crane, Grey Crown Crane, Blue Crane, Red-chested flufftail.

Grasslands: Blue Crane, Denhams Bustard, Redwing Francolin, Cape Grassbird, Wailing Cisticola, Secretary Birds, Jackal Buzzard, Long Crested Eagle, and Southern Bald Ibis.

Rocky Areas: Sentinel Rock Thrush, Buffstreak Char, Mountain Chat, Cloud Cisticola, Wailing Cisticola, and Raptors

Mountain Slopes: Gurney’s Sugarbird, Malachite Sunbird

It’s a prime spot for grassland birding, birding around the wetlands in the area, birding along many of the local dams and ponds.

Dullstroom town itself offers a wide variety of species and then within a radius of 25km from town especially towards the north of town we find scrub and bushveld savanna., pub-1584358087548674, DIRECT, f08c47fec0942fa0
