Growing up in and around Dullstroom in the early 1980s, I was fortunate to have been exposed to a lot of birdlife in the area but it’s not until after completing school that I started getting into birding.
We are fortunate in Southern Africa that we have over 900 species of birds in the region.
The Escarpment of Mpumalanga hosts quite a few of them, being either permanent residents, inter – Africa migrants or migrants from Europe and Asia during our summer months.
Situated at an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level, Dullstroom gets very cold during winter but from around September to March the warmer summer temperatures spoil us with a vast plethora of migratory birdlife.
With a diverse habitat in the Escarpment area, we have birding species that are specialized and can only be found in these particular habitats; Marshy Wetlands, Grasslands, Rocky Outcrops, Mountain Slopes with Sugar bushes, Plantations and Dams/ponds/lakes all provide unique birding locations with rare, localized, elusive and spectacular species.
